The thing about WoW is that it almost makes you feel like you're being productive, since every time you log in, you work on your characters.

This is so much different than other games, where you log on and basically create your character each time you play. This makes it easier to walk away from, since you know that character will basically "reset" once you walk away from it.

A nice middleground, I think, is a game like Battlefield 2 or Call of Duty 4 - you essentially can choose a different character to play with each time, but the difference is that you can earn awards that go to your ACCOUNT (not your character).

Plus games like those don't have people who are ridiculously over-geared (i.e. people who have no life outside of WoW), so it's a more even playing field.

I quit WoW twice, then the third time I finally learned my lesson and stripped my character down, donated all my money to my guild bank, then quit!

It feels good to do other stuff, if only to play other games, like you're doing. :)

I also considered selling mine too but thought it might be too much of a pain so didn't bother.

I'd hope that people start to become sick of the game by the expansion but don't forget that the game launched in 2004 and now in 2008 they hit 10 million subscribers...and growing. Pretty astounding numbers.

How are you holding up?

Oh, Jim, BTW - read your story and commented on it. I had my moments like you, and I felt bad about them too. The important thing is you are "awake" now and out of it. Don't be too hard on yourself. Shake your head, throw your hands up and say, "Hey, I had some bad moments but i am OUT now!"... Then just move on.

You sound a lot like me. My wife teaches 6th grade so about 8PM she is wiped out. All our kids are down by 8PM as well, so I have tons of time at night. That was the only time I ever got to play, but that is pretty much all I did during those hours. I am making a list of things I can do during those hours for times I am brain dead and just want to play warcraft 3. Warcraft 3 doesnt really scare me though like playing wow did. I can leave very easily from a game of Tower D, but I would keep queing for BGs all night long in wow.

no I didnt delete my chars or anything, i just turned off my account. I was thinking I would craigslist it to try and get some cash at least out of the 3k hrs i put in. lol. But then I said why give someone else an addiction, so the toons will just sit there forever. My friends keep saying I will be back for the 80 expansion but I say they will be sick of WOW by then. lol

Out of curiosity, did you delete your toons or just cancel the account? Since you've attempted to quit in the past, you're aware that Blizzard retains your characters indefinitely so that the temptation to rejoin is always there.

I meant to delete my toons but didn't. I did, however, trash all of my level 70 gear, items, and gold...including vendoring the entire primal mooncloth, frozen shadowweave, and Whitemend priest sets along with about 5 Kara epics.

It definitely helps reduce the craving when you realize that joining would mean you'd have to play a naked, broke dwarf priest sitting in Ironforge.

I just recently quit as well and have been looking for other games to play to help pass time. I think you're doing fine by choosing Warcraft 3. Personally I'm really missing the lore and the story behind the game and maybe Warcraft 3 would give some of that back without the addiction that comes with it.

The tough times for me seem to be when the wife and baby go to bed...since TV is just crap and I'm sick of Madden for the X-Box. Maybe Warcraft 3 would be "the patch" of fighting a WoW addiction?
