I completely understand what you're saying - WoW can be very addicting, and possibly distract a person from the more important aspects of life. However, for me, WoW is an amazing product for keeping my friends and I together. Over the years, my life-long friends and I have drifted to different states, and generally do not see each other in person more than once a year. With a product like WoW, we can still spend a great deal of time together, and always have something in common.

A lot of time when friends do not spend time together in person, their interests change, and eventually they do not have much in common. When you start talking, the conversation always drifts to, "Remember that time 10 years ago that we did such-and-such". At least with WoW, when we talk, there is always something "new" to talk about; and while you are playing, you are still actively involved in their lives, so you get to hear stories about what is going on with their job, their marriage, their kids, etc. So, while I would not encourage someone to waste their life away playing a game, I am very thankful that I can hold a strong bond with my old friends due to all of our shared adventures together in WoW.

On another note, I think that is awesome that you spend time together with your kids playing games. My father spent a lot of time playing games with my brother and I when we were kids, and I have always had fond memories of those experiences.

[...] Cured The game is pretty simple, and easy not to get addicted to. If you buy the box you get 6 months free premium membership (which is only 5 bucks a month anyway) and you get a bling gnome. Bling gnomes are hysterical as they eat the items … [...]

The thing about WoW is that it almost makes you feel like you're being productive, since every time you log in, you work on your characters.

This is so much different than other games, where you log on and basically create your character each time you play. This makes it easier to walk away from, since you know that character will basically "reset" once you walk away from it.

A nice middleground, I think, is a game like Battlefield 2 or Call of Duty 4 - you essentially can choose a different character to play with each time, but the difference is that you can earn awards that go to your ACCOUNT (not your character).

Plus games like those don't have people who are ridiculously over-geared (i.e. people who have no life outside of WoW), so it's a more even playing field.

I quit WoW twice, then the third time I finally learned my lesson and stripped my character down, donated all my money to my guild bank, then quit!

It feels good to do other stuff, if only to play other games, like you're doing. :)

I also considered selling mine too but thought it might be too much of a pain so didn't bother.

I'd hope that people start to become sick of the game by the expansion but don't forget that the game launched in 2004 and now in 2008 they hit 10 million subscribers...and growing. Pretty astounding numbers.

How are you holding up?

Oh, Jim, BTW - read your story and commented on it. I had my moments like you, and I felt bad about them too. The important thing is you are "awake" now and out of it. Don't be too hard on yourself. Shake your head, throw your hands up and say, "Hey, I had some bad moments but i am OUT now!"... Then just move on.

You sound a lot like me. My wife teaches 6th grade so about 8PM she is wiped out. All our kids are down by 8PM as well, so I have tons of time at night. That was the only time I ever got to play, but that is pretty much all I did during those hours. I am making a list of things I can do during those hours for times I am brain dead and just want to play warcraft 3. Warcraft 3 doesnt really scare me though like playing wow did. I can leave very easily from a game of Tower D, but I would keep queing for BGs all night long in wow.

no I didnt delete my chars or anything, i just turned off my account. I was thinking I would craigslist it to try and get some cash at least out of the 3k hrs i put in. lol. But then I said why give someone else an addiction, so the toons will just sit there forever. My friends keep saying I will be back for the 80 expansion but I say they will be sick of WOW by then. lol
